The Forerunner family of Network Modules provide the physical interfaces for ForeRunner ATM switches. These modules provide LAN and WAN connectivity to other ATM switches, ATM-capable desktop computers and servers, ATM-ready hubs, routers and multiplexers, and carrier ATM services.

ForeRunner Network Modules offer industry standard interfaces ranging in rates from 1.5 Mbps to 622 Mbps over fiber, coax and copper media. This variety of modular interfaces gives the ForeRunner ATM switch family the flexibility to meet the ATM throughput and QoS requirements of the most complex LAN and WAN internetworks.

In addition to this broad range of interfaces, Network Modules provide ForeRunner switches with sophisticated end-to-end traffic management. Traffic management includes advanced features such as Per-VC Queuing, Smart Buffers, Packet Level Discard and Dual GCRA Policing.

As ForeRunner ATM switch platforms and networks are upgraded, network modules can be retained or used in other switches. Or they can migrate from the core to the edge of the ATM network, providing continuous investment protection.

Capacity can be added as needed, simply by adding Network Modules to the switch. These modules are field installable and hot swappable to reduce maintenance time and network downtime.
